CLINICAL EVALUATION OF FINGER INJURIES




Abstract
Finger injuries are becoming more common with the increasing use of mechanical, industrial and household appliances. The injuries can be managed in various method and 91 patients with 115 digits from January in 1986 to September in 1987 were evaluated. We have obtained the following results.
1. The most common age distribution was third decade and male to female ratio was about 3:1.
2. The ratio of right to left hand was about 1:1 but the dominant to non-dominant hand was about 3:1.
3. The index finger was most commonly injured (36.5%) and the next was middle finger (24.3%).
4. The most common type of the injuries was the crushing injury and the most common vector was a kind of pressure.
5. The injuries of zone I was managed in various method such as spontaneous healing, primary closure, skin graft, composite graft, local and distant flap, and microscopic replantation was performed to all of the zone III injuries, but zone II injuries were managed by all of the above mentioned methods case by case.
6. The survival rate of the microreplantation to the injuries of the zone II was 72% and zone III was 81%.
7. The regional anesthesia was more commonly performed than the general anesthesia.
